How to Sell SACCO Shares in Kenya: Step by Step

Selling SACCO shares is not the same as selling listed shares on the NSE. The buyer must normally qualify for membership, the SACCO must confirm the balance and the transfer must be entered in the official register.

1. Ask whether the shares are transferable

Request the current bylaws, transfer form and written process. Confirm that your shares are fully paid, transferable and not restricted by a loan, dispute or other obligation.

2. Clear the exit issues

Check outstanding loans, guarantees, deductions and notice periods. A SACCO may not release deposits or complete an exit while you remain liable for a loan or another member’s guaranteed balance.

3. Obtain a verified statement

Separate share capital, deposits, interest due and any deductions. List only what can legally be transferred. Do not advertise a combined amount based on an old statement.

4. Set a realistic price

Use par value as a starting point, then consider recent dividends, SACCO financial health, buyer demand and your timeline. Build transfer costs into the negotiation.

5. Find an eligible buyer

Use a marketplace, member network or the SACCO’s internal process. Tell the buyer that eligibility and ownership must be confirmed directly with the SACCO.

6. Verify both parties

The buyer should verify the seller’s identity and balance. The seller should verify the buyer’s membership eligibility and ability to complete payment. Keep written records.

7. Complete approval before final payment

Submit the transfer form and supporting documents. Follow the SACCO’s board or committee approval process. Agree on a controlled payment sequence and confirm that the register has been updated.

Bottom line

A transfer is complete when the SACCO recognises the buyer as the holder, not when two people exchange money on WhatsApp.
