January Is Coming: A 100-Day SACCO Money Plan
6 September 2026
Use this 100-day SACCO plan to prepare for January school fees, bills, savings goals and possible share-sale needs.

January does not become expensive overnight. The pressure usually starts building in September and October, when school fees, rent, travel and festive spending begin competing for the same income. A 100-day plan gives a SACCO member time to use savings and credit deliberately.
Days 100-76: Work out the real January bill
List school fees, uniforms, transport, rent, food and existing loan deductions. Use actual invoices where possible. Remove costs that can wait. The result is the amount you need, not a round figure borrowed out of fear.
Days 75-51: Check your SACCO position
Download your statement. Confirm deposits, share capital, current loans, guarantees and available multiplier. Ask how long a school-fees or development loan takes to process and whether guarantors are required.
Days 50-31: Build cash before debt
Increase deposits or a separate liquid savings balance. Redirect bonuses and side-income. Avoid locking every extra shilling in share capital if the money will be needed in January. Share capital can be hard to access quickly.
Days 30-15: Choose the funding mix
Decide what will come from cash, a SACCO loan, an advance or a share sale. Compare the repayment burden, not only the amount approved. If selling shares is necessary, start early because eligibility and approval take time.
Days 14-1: Protect the plan
Pay priority items directly where possible. Avoid borrowing for festive spending after already taking a January loan. Keep an emergency margin for transport, books or medical costs.
A simple Kenyan example
A parent expecting KES 120,000 in fees may save KES 40,000 over four months, use KES 20,000 from a bonus and borrow KES 60,000. That is easier to repay than taking the entire KES 120,000 as a short-term emergency loan in January.
Bottom line
Start with the bill, then choose the money. Starting with the maximum loan available usually creates a more expensive January and a difficult February.
Editorial note: Loan terms and processing times differ. Confirm them early with your SACCO.
